I have officially made my first crochet scrunchie!
I’ve had this Yarnspirations Bernat Crushed Velvet yarn in Burgundy for… years. I actually got it when I was learning how to use a loom, and I was obsessively making scarves lol. I quickly realized that velvet yarn was a completely different ball game… and gave up.

I’m a bit of a hobby collector. I have the starting supplies of multiple arts scattered around my home office. Every few months I go through and de-stash everything. Well, when the loom went, most of the yarn went along with it. Except for one skein… this crushed velvet. It was too pretty to get rid of!!! I knew someday I’d figure out something to do with it, it was just a matter of what and when.
Well, as I continue down this crochet journey, I am yearning for more projects to make. I like scarves and hats, but I live in the central/southeast US, so the weather will make those obsolete for 65-70% of the year. So, I look for more projects that I can test my skills with.
Today at work I wore my hair up in a pony tail, and had a satin hair tie overtop a normal elastic. I realized the satin tie didn’t fully cover the normal elastic, and thought, it’d be nice to wear a full scrunchie over this. However, I only have a few, and am not super wild about any of them. I am an amateur seamstress, so I thought about my fabric stash on the drive home and tried to pick out a fabric that would be cute as a scrunchie.
It then hit me – this velvet yarn.
Surely people crochet scrunchies?
And sure enough, they do.
I followed this tutorial to crochet a scrunchie around a normal elastic. It specifically calls for velvet yarn, and I thought I just might be advanced enough to use it.
All of this practice has paid off – I could tell where my stitches were, even with a yarn that is known to make that difficult!
This was also my first time trying treble crochets, and it’s super easy if you know a double crochet. It’s just an extra starting loop, and an extra rep of pulling a loop through two on your hook. (I didn’t explain that well, but it really is doable if you know dc!)
So, here is my cutie velvet scrunchie. It’s super pretty… and the cats have already claimed part of it as their own (peep the kitty hairs, lol)

This was a super fun 1 hour project, which I find I don’t really find much in crochet haha. I definitely lean towards slow-and-steady while I’m learning! I am excitedly wearing it to the dentist appointment I must now run to. My root canal may have failed, but this project sure didn’t! lol
p.s. my root canal didn’t fail
bye();
